Joel makes a stop at O'Briens on Wednesday Night!!

Canada has produced some of the world’s most enduring songwriters and Joel Plaskett is hailed as one of the best. With countless awards to his credit, thousands of tour dates, and numerous recording and producing projects under his belt, Plaskett remains one of the most innovative and prolific artists on the scene today.
The end of 2012 started off quickly.  Joel and The Emergency worked around the clock, sending weekly volleys to fight off the seasonal blues: a brand new song – recorded, mixed, mastered, and released – every single week for ten weeks, accompanied by snippets of video documenting the process in-studio. It was an epic undertaking,which came together in the physical release of his eighth recording, Scrappy Happiness. The album garnered outstanding reviews and Joel Plaskett and The Emergency have been touring steadily since its release.

Scrappy Happiness is the follow-up to Joel’s hugely successful triple record, Three, which garnered overwhelming media response and caught the attention of international audiences. Where Three is a thoughtful solo record that offers up gems that range from pure pop to soul stirring folk, Scrappy Happiness is an epic melodic rock record powered by stellar songs and a sense of urgency.

In addition to his eight recordings, a DVD and a retrospective LP, Plaskett still has the creative energy to work on outside projects. He masterminded a reunion Thrush Hermit Tour and Box Set, has produced recordings for Sarah Slean, Al Tuck, David Myles, Steve Poltz, and most recently, buzz act Mo Kenney.

Tonight (3/19) Joel is in Philadelphia  World Café Live.  He wraps up his tour right here in Boston tomorrow.

To look at any of the Mexican masters of art in museums and exhibitions abroad is not only very interesting but it also makes one very proud. The history of the Detroit Institute of Arts and Diego Rivera (as well as the fashion of wondering what Frida Kahlo was doing at that same time) is already part of the mythology of the history of art in Mexico, and possibly in the world. Although Detroit is currently not the best place to visit in the United States (the city is mired in an economic crisis that has left it half-desolate and with extremely high levels of violence and poverty), the DIA, as the museum is known, is still one of the best places to appreciate world-class painting and its collection is truly one of the most beautiful and interesting that I have seen. *
The fresco (mural) "Detroit Industry" was painted by Diego Rivera between 1932 and 1933; we Mexicans know it from our elementary school books (at least those of my school years) and its images are present in tens of illustrations about Mexican muralism. Its main theme is precisely the Detroit industry, which is none other than the automotive and related ones. Apparently it's Diego Rivera's the largest mural outside Mexico.
Just after one enters the museum the receptionists offer detailed information about the highlights of their permanent collection among which, of course, is "The Industry Of Detroit"; you receive a clear explanation of how to get to the room where the mural is, in the central hall of the museum, a privileged space due to its light and spaciousness.

After what little I've read of the research that Renato González Mello has done on the esoteric part of Diego Rivera in his works in Mexico City (especially the mural in the central building of the minister of education, "La SEP"), I could look at this fresco in Detroit with a new idea in my head; at some other moment I would have contemplated it only aesthetically as a perhaps direct and propagandistic remnant of social movements of the last century (like socialism, class conflict, etc.) and, though it certainly is very influenced by that, the addition of an esoteric interpretation extends the enjoyment and learning from what is observed.  Then those images of curvy women, of plants and fruits, of earth, roots and seeds, and of course the positions of the characters and the colors used within the overall composition of the painting, acquire another dimension. Obviously I am not an expert and I will not delve deeper, but I can refer you to the latest research on the work of Diego Rivera by Dr. González Mello et al.I share here my photos of the mural.   I hope you enjoy them.

I'm a writer in Spanish so, my writings are in that language; sometimes I publish the translation to English, but sometimes not, it will be always an approximation to the original one.

uncovered when it dawns,
nor your smile when you see me
and those eyes closing again

I have lost your smell, or I mistake it,
 but not your sound that moans,
nor your hands that touch,
and those warm lips that welcome me./

I have them here.../

You're not who walks at my side anymore,
nor who sweats when I ejaculate tired

Woman, you're not anymore
she who receives my embrace!/

I also know of something that I miss from you:

On Saturday December 1, 2012 the Scouts of Pack 235 in Hartland hosted a pancake breakfast at the Stone Church in Hartland VT. There was a steady stream of hungry folks at the event there to enjoy the blueberry, chocolate chip or plain pancakes smothered in Vermont maple syrup.

The annual Craft Fair with Santa was held Saturday December 1, 2012 at the Hartland Elementary School. The light snow that fell made for a festival for children and families in Hartland visiting Santa.

Saturday December 1, 2012, the Upper Valley Waldorf School in Quechee hosted its annual Winter Fair. This year’s fair included candle making, gingerbread decorating, a luncheon, music by the school chorus and the always popular Crystal Cookie Cave and Gnome Dome.

Folks in Brownsville got together on Saturday December 1, 2012 and hosted a Holiday Bazaar in the Town Hall. Local crafts people were on hand to show off their wares just in time for some holiday shopping. Lunch was also served and rumor had it that the corn chowder was to die for. $5 got you a bowl of chowder and all you could fit on a plate, sandwiches, salads, and cookies.

Mr. Potter (Gene Morse, center) welcomes home Harry Bailey(Peter Pardoe, right) from the war.

On December 8, 2012 Hartland Community Arts presented “It’s A Wonderful Hartland Holiday.” There were two performances one Saturday evening at 7 pm and a matinee at 2 pm on Sunday. The show was at Damon Hall and admission was free, however donations for the Food Pantry were accepted.

The performance was a variation on the classic film produced and directed by Frank Capra, based on the short story “the Greatest Gift” written by Philip Van Doren Stern in 1939. On Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls NY, George Bailey and his family rediscover the meaning of Christmas through song and music.

The 802sdays Jazz Band opened the show; Sydney Read andEmily LeBlanc on sax.

Bentley's New Year's Eve Tradition

Bentley’s Annual Confetti and Balloon New Year’s Ever Party was packed with revelers Monday evening. Touted as one of the Upper Valley’s Best Parties the New Year’s Eve event did not disappoint with a packed dance floor, a champagne toast at midnight and confetti and balloons dropping from the ceiling. DJ Eileen had the guests on their feet from 10:30 PM until 3 AM. The restaurant also hosted it’s prix fixe five course dinner from 5:30 until 8:30 PM. 2013 was welcomed in with style at Bentley’s.

Hartland's Emerging Artists Showcase

The 5th Annual Emerging Artist Showcase was hosted by Hartland Community Connections at Damon Hall, Hartland Three Corners on Saturday January 12, 2013 at 5 PM. The showcase featured young local musicians who entertained the crowd of about 80 people for almost two hours. The artists featured this year were Camila Pentland (Hartland, VT), Emma Bliss (Andover, VT), Rebecca Scelza (Hartland, VT), Jack Snyder (Woodstock, VT) and the four piece band Carter Glass (from Sharon Academy). The music was follow by a community dinner featuring foods from A Taste of Africa in White River Junction, VT.

Vermont Flurry, Snow Sculptures in Woodstock

Edward Forrest works on “Ad Lib” featuring an owl and a sealplaying with a ball.

Local and National Snow Sculpture Artists gathered last week on the Green in Woodstock to create some fantastic sculptures. The event was sponsored by Pentangle Arts Council and the ArtisTree along with support from various local businesses.



Visiting from Winston-Salem North Carolina, Cade Lindsay 9 was inspired to work on his own snow sculpture. Cade was visiting with his family doing research for his 3rd grade project about Vermont.

Artisan Trunk Show in Woodstock

Local artists gathered on Saturday at the Little Theatre in Woodstock VT for a "Artisan Trunk Show." About 15 artists displayed their crafts, prints and foods. The event was organized by Kimberly DiNofrio and Andrea Trzaskos both were also selling their crafts.
